The Rev. Dr. Robert MacSwain, associate professor of theology at the School of Theology, has been named co-editor-in-chief of the Anglican Theological Review (ATR).

MacSwain had previously served as secretary of the executive committee of the Anglican Theological Review, Inc., and as Sewanee’s institutional representative to the ATR‘s board of trustees. Elected in 2024, MacSwain’s first edition as co-editor-in-chief is the recently published Winter 2025 edition of the journal.

"For over 100 years the Anglican Theological Review has been one of the leading scholarly journals in the Anglican tradition. It is an honor to join the editorial team of this venerable institution and to help lead it into its second century,” said MacSwain about his appointment to co-editor-in-chief.

“It’s a pleasure to welcome Dr. MacSwain back to the academic and theological community of the ATR, where his scholarship, leadership, and dedication to the Anglican tradition continue to inspire students and colleagues alike,” said Christopher Smith, director of operations at the Anglican Theological Review.

MacSwain studied philosophy at Liberty University and the University of Idaho, and theology at Princeton Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh. Ordained in Canterbury Cathedral, MacSwain spent three years in parish ministry at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Kinston, North Carolina, before beginning doctoral studies in philosophical theology at the University of Durham in 2004. MacSwain has been on the faculty of the School of Theology since 2009, and his teaching and research combine philosophy, theology, ethics, literature, and spirituality, with a particular focus on the interactions of these disciplines within the Anglican tradition.
