Visiting Assistant Professor of Practical Theology the Rev. Dr. Britta Meiers Carlson, recently returned from a trip to Thessaloniki, Greece, where she participated in the Sixteenth International Conference of the Ecclesiological Investigations International Research Network (EIIRN), "Dissent, Power, and Christian Identity after Nicaea." The conference commemorated the 1700th Anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea.
EIIRN cultivates interdisciplinary and ecumenical spaces for scholars engaged in the study of the church. The conference operated from a question, "In what ways does Nicaea continue to shape how we configure the Church today, with what opportunities and at what cost?" An excellent array of plenary sessions and panels addressed this question from a variety of disciplinary and contextual perspectives. Many of the conversations coalesced around the call and challenge of Christian unity, and generated thoughtful, creative reflection on the past, present, and future of the church.
Dr. Meiers Carlson participated in a panel, "The Politics of Nicaea, Then and Now," presenting a paper entitled "Performing Pilgrimage: Political Ecclesiology in Immigrant Solidarity Work." Many thanks to the Episcopal Church for the Conant Fund Grant that made her participation in this enriching event possible.
