Presented by the Rev. Laurel Mathewson, T'13
Ten years ago, Laurel and Colin Mathewson became co-vicars of St. Luke’s in San Diego, a family-sized congregation made up almost entirely of Sudanese former refugees. Today, the ASA has doubled: about 150 people worship at St. Luke’s each week in English, Arabic, and Swahili—a kingdom of God collection of souls primarily from South Sudan, the Congo, and established Anglo-Americans. Alongside this work of parish renewal, Laurel’s prayer life was transformed through the teachings of St. Teresa of Avila, and she became a passionate and published evangelist for Teresa’s wisdom. What insights from Teresa’s spirituality might renew your own relationship with God? What insights from St. Luke’s journey of growth and transformation might bear fruit in your own parish? This workshop will explore the fruits (and challenges!) of prioritizing humility and relationship(s) in both our interior and congregational lives.
The Rev. Laurel Mathewson is a graduate of Stanford University and the School of Theology at the University of the South. She is the author of An Intimate Good: A Skeptical Christian Mystic in Conversation with Teresa of Avila and the editor of The Interior Castle: Exploring a Spiritual Classic as a Modern Reader.
