Born in 1950 in Lancaster, Pa., Byerly is the third daughter of six, to John and Sylvia Byerly. In 1968, just short of 18 years of age, she enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh and attended through 1971. After several years of working in universities (Drew, Brown, and Vanderbilt), Byerly returned to school and earned her B.A. with a major in classical languages at Vanderbilt in 1988. She attended graduate school in classics at Princeton University for two years before returning to Nashville to work for a hospital management company, then for Vanderbilt Medical Center. In 1994, Byerly, and her husband, Don, moved to Sewanee to begin work in the advancement office. Her husband is an adjunct professor in classical languages for the University and they have one daughter.
