Clinical Pastoral Education
Taking holistic approach to pastoral education.
Clinical pastoral education (CPE) provides professional interfaith education for ministry, bringing theological students and ministers of all faiths into supervised encounters with persons in crisis. Out of an intense involvement with persons in need and the feedback from peers and teachers, students develop new awareness of themselves as persons and of the needs of those to whom they minster. From theological reflection on specific human situations, students gain a new understanding of ministry and develop skills in interpersonal and inter professional relationships.
In addition to onsite training, we help facilitate interviews for CPE as well as prepare students for the experience with pre- and post CPE colloquies. These conversations offer practical as well as spiritual preparation before leaving for CPE. The colloquy after CPE provides a significant chance to integrate one’s personal experience into the shared work of formation for ministry that is central to the Sewanee experience.
