Continuing Education

The School of Theology offers a series of courses and programs designed to meet the needs and interests of clergy and laity. These include courses of general interest in spirituality, evangelism, pastoral concerns, biblical studies, Anglican studies, and Christian education. The unique pedagogical aspect of the majority of these programs is the inclusion of current M.Div. and M.A. students. Clergy and laity who participate in these continuing education programs also teach current seminarians out of their own experiences in active ministry.

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EfM)
As the emphasis on lay ministry has grown, the Education for Ministry (EfM) program has played a crucial role in developing theologically informed, knowledgeable lay leaders.Theological education familiarizes individuals with the foundations of the Christian faith and teaches them how to interpret and express that faith in daily life.

Since its beginning in 1975, more than 60,000 people have enrolled in EfM, an international program that spans the United States and includes Anglican dioceses in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Europe. EfM currently has 8,500 students enrolled in 1,000 groups and also offers EfM online. Students sign up one year at a time for this four-year program, which covers the basics of Old and New Testaments, church history, and theology.

The Rev. Dr. Louis Weil
Jones Lecturer
LECTURES
The School of Theology sponsors several lecture series. The DuBose Lectures are usually held in the fall at the time of the alumni/ae gathering. Endowed by an initial gift from the Rev. Jack C. Graves and substantially increased by a gift from Miss Margaret (Peggy) A. Chisholm of Laurel, Miss., and New York City, the lectures memorialize William Porcher DuBose, second dean of the School of Theology. These lectures focus annually on a topic of wide appeal in the church.

In the spring, the Beattie and Arrington Lectures are given in alternate years and usually focus on more scholarly topics. The Samuel Marshall Beattie Lectures have been made possible by Ruth McGee Beattie as a memorial to her husband. The Arrington Lectures have been funded by Cornelia G. C. Arrington as "a Thank Offering for four John White Arringtons."

The Bayard Hale Jones Memorial Lectureship in Liturgics was established by Emily S. Jones. The Belford Lecture has been endowed in honor of the Rev. Dr. Lee Archer Belford, on topics in Christian/Jewish relations. For upcoming lecture information, please check the School of Theology opening web page for news articles, e-mail theology@sewanee.edu, or call 800.722.1974.
