Allen to Lecture on the Spirituality of Reiki

Hamilton Hall, Hargrove Auditorium,

Dr. Ruth Allen, T'09, will talk about her book, The Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Reiki: One Source, One Spirit, that focuses on the interconnection of Reiki, a hands-on-healing practice, Christian theology, science, and spiritual growth.  She will discuss her background as a highly skeptical research scientist with little interest in the healing arts who became a Reiki practitioner and subsequently attended seminary at the University of the South and served as a hospital chaplain.  The application of Reiki therapy in traditional medicine, psychotherapy, hospital chaplaincy, spiritual direction, and self-healing of body, mind, and spirit will be addressed.
The presentation will be followed with a Q&A session involving both Dr. Allen and The Reverend Dr. Bob Hughes.

Allen has journeyed from a practicing scientist, researcher, and teacher to a spiritually-based healer in the practice of Reiki and a hospital chaplain. She has a bachelor's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas, and a master's degree from the University of Virginia focused on zoology and chemistry. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of New Orleans with research involving the interdisciplinary fields of cognitive psychology, biology, and education. Allen's research has been selected for presentation at international research conventions, and she has been published in international research journals.

In 1997, Dr. Allen began her training in the practice of Reiki therapy and in 2001 became a Reiki Master and Teacher. In 2009, she earned a master of arts degree in theology at The School of Theology. Allen is married, has two grown children, and she and her husband split their time between Mandeville, La., and Monteagle, Tenn. She currently volunteers as a hospital chaplain.
