JOB DESCRIPTION - Coordinator of Children’s and Family Ministries
General

The Coordinator of Children’s and Family Ministries is a part-time staff member - lay or ordained - responsible for the oversight and direction of Christian Formation and associated ministries for families with children and youth within the parish. The position is for 20 hours per week. The broad responsibilities of the position include:

• Designing, implementing and developing the Christian Education programs from preschool through high school.
• Providing a warm welcome to all children and youth of the parish with their households to parish programs.
• Recruiting, coordinating, mentoring and training teachers and volunteers. Serving as part of the Church School Committee.
• Acting as liaison with clergy and staff to welcome children and youth into the wider life and ministry of the parish and encouraging other adults to offer that same welcome.
Qualifications
• Strong organizational skills. Able to coordinate a multi-faceted program involving staff and volunteer teams. Communicates effectively with teachers, parents and staff to ensure smooth-running programs. Has budgeting, word processing and database skills.
• Enjoys and has experience working with children and youth. Has a clear understanding of their developmental needs. Is willing to know the children and youth well and give them a strong sense of being valued members of the Church community.
• Is an experienced master teacher. Is able to provide teacher training, support, resources and feedback.
• Some theological training is preferred, together with experience in Christian Education and an appreciation for the Episcopal tradition. Previous knowledge and experience of the Godly Play and Journey to Adulthood programs will be helpful, and experience in the arts, music and/or children’s literature would be beneficial.

Supervision

• Coordinator of Children’s and Family Ministries will receive supervision from the Associate Rector.
• Coordinator of Children’s and Family Ministries will receive a review after 60 days and an annual review from the Associate Rector

Responsibilities

A. Organization and Administration

• In consultation with the Clergy, Choir Director and Parish Life Committee, develops and implements an annual calendar for Church School and youth programming that includes curriculum objectives, staffing and volunteer needs, Sunday morning schedule, special events and projects.
• Develops budget for the year.
• Keeps records (class lists, birth dates, etc.).
• Coordinates annual registration and welcomes, with a focus on incorporating new families.
• Communicates regularly with parents via weekly emails, the school calendar, promotion of special events, and relevant articles in the parish newsletter,
B. Program Implementation
• Ensures that the parish fulfills Safe Church teacher training requirements and all other diocesan requirements for Christian Education programs.
• Recruits, trains and coordinates Church School teachers and a team of mentors for the Journey to Adulthood youth program, ensuring that each class has as many teachers as are legally required (two per class room). Develops the teaching schedule and communicates it clearly.
• Fosters creative teaching throughout the Church School. Invites talented congregation members to participate as appropriate.
• Provides support and training for the entire team of Church School teachers in Pre-K through High School.
• Is present and takes responsibility for the smooth operation of Sunday morning programs and any other church events involving children and youth. Handles disciplinary and support issues.
• Working with the Christian Formation and Parish Life Committees, and Journey to Adulthood mentors, designs and coordinates special events
• Works on inter-generational parish events, such as Homecoming, Spring picnic, Advent wreath making, Epiphany party, Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, etc.
• In coordination with the Clergy and office staff, will hire and support nursery caregivers.
• May preach or take on liturgical roles, as assigned by the Rector.

C. Liaison and Integration

• Attends weekly staff meetings and facilitates the integration of children and youth into worship and all parish programs. Communicates relevant program details to the staff, the vestry and the parish.
• Attends vestry meetings as needed to foster strong and clear communication and cooperation between the vestry and Church School.
• Develops collegial relationships and communicates regularly with clergy, choir director, acolyte directors and scheduler, and nursery staff.
• Will assist in developing a Christian Formation Committee to discuss curriculum and all relevant Church School needs.
• Serves as a pastoral minister to meet the pastoral needs of children, youth and their families, in conjunction with parish clergy.

Because of the liturgical demands of this parish, the Curate must be able to sing with a reasonable degree of proficiency and have an affinity for catholic liturgy.

Fidelity to the received teaching of the Church catholic in faith and morals is essential.

St James’ is an active program-sized parish (ASA 232), with strong lay involvement, located in Texarkana, Texas. The twin cities of Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Arkansas have a combined population of 75,000, located midway between Dallas and Little Rock. Texarkana has good schools, a cost of living lower than the national average, and affordable housing prices.

Compensation will include full-time stipend, housing allowance, pension contributions and health insurance. The term of appointment is for at least two years, renewable by mutual agreement.

As Christ Church, New Bern, celebrates her 300th year, we are seeking an Associate Rector whose primary areas of responsibility will include outreach and pastoral care.

Christ Church has a long history of caring for those in our community and beyond. There are literally hundreds of people who are the hands and feet of Jesus in over a dozen efforts to bring comfort and hope to people in need. During the recent Rector Search, Outreach was identified as one of the top priorities going forward. We are prayerfully searching for someone who will help coordinate all of our outreach efforts as well as identify and develop opportunities for multi-generational engagement in service to others. Assistant Rector

The assistant rector will assist the rector in providing leadership to the congregation so that the goals and mission of the church are achieved. The Assistant Rector is appointed by and accountable to the rector and is expected to extend and support the rector’s ministry in the parish, community, and diocese.

Under the rector’s supervision and authority, the assistant rector will share pastoral care responsibilities with the other clergy of the parish in visiting those in the hospital and parishioners who are unable to attend church regularly. He or she will also be included in the celebrating and preaching rotation. The assistant rector will also perform priestly duties as assigned by the rector, as well as performing functional responsibilities of the rector during the rector’s absence under the supervision of the senior warden. The assistant rector will join the other clergy in a teaching rotation, which will consist of, among other responsibilities, leading the Wednesday evening program &/or securing guest speakers for Wednesday evenings on occasion. This person will also help develop and oversee the social media strategy of the parish.

The assistant rector’s main responsibilities will be outreach and ministry to children, youth, and families as well as to young adults in the twenty to forty year range. He or she will also serve as chaplain of the Holy Trinity Episcopal SchoolGainesville, conducting one chapel service per week and attending board meetings. He or she will participate in the events of the Holy Trinity children and youth ministries as well as occasional diocesan youth events. Our parishioners are a mix of local families (some here for generations); new residents (lots of young families), many who work in Charlottesville; and active empty-nest retirees, including many at the Wintergreen four-season resort community. With Charlottesville’s growth in the past decades, our identity has evolved from a small, quiet, rural church to a more bustling congregation with more families, more programs, and a desire for more discipleship, more formation for all ages, more meaningful outreach, and more involvement in the community. We had two priests on our staff from 2005 to 2012. When our previous Rector retired in 2012, our last Assistant also departed. Our new rector needs the support of another priest to help us regain our momentum.

We expect you to --

1. Live, teach, and proclaim the faith with joy and love.

2. Create and lead programs to attract, reach out to, and follow up with visitors and newcomers, supporting them in their transition to active discipleship.

3. Develop and implement a coordinated vision for forming Christian disciples of all ages, working with the Director of Christian Formation and our engaged Christian Formation committees. Help teach adults and teens. Help recruit, train, equip, and support formation volunteers for all ages.

4. Provide focus, leadership, and support for our outreach ministry. We provide financial support to over 30 mission partners, but we have active involvement with only a handful. Help organize, preach, teach, and facilitate the transition to more focused and hands-on service and mission to the local community.

5. Share all aspects of active parish ministry: sacramental life, preaching, teaching, pastoral care for all ages, and parish administration. Work collegially with our rector and staff as you and the parish both grow and develop together.

6. Have fun. Stay healthy. Enjoy this beautiful area, our life together, and your ministry.

We seek an assistant to the rector who wants to put down roots here, to love us and be loved by us. We are in this for the long haul. Duties and Responsibilities

1. Foster faith formation among parish youth to help them develop as Christians and to live out the good news of the Gospel in their daily lives.

2. Initiate, implement, and oversee religious curriculum development, consistent with the Episcopal Church, to meet the particular needs of parish children, youth and their families.

3. Develop personal relationships with youth by creating a welcoming, fun and inclusive culture, being a friend and positive role model, and providing spiritual counseling as needed; also develop close ties with parents to support youth faith formation.

4. Plan and coordinate camps, conferences, retreats and trips, and participate in and encourage involvement in diocesan youth activities and with other parishes.

5. Identify, develop and disciple youth leaders, create opportunities for youth to be involved in worship and ministry as approved by the staff, and recruit, train, and motivate volunteers to assist in children, youth and family ministry.

6. Take primary responsibility for planning and leading Sunday night youth group meetings that are exciting, fun, and develop a sense of Christian community.

7. Take primary responsibility for planning and leading Sunday morning youth group studies between the 9:00 and 11:00 services.

8. Communicate program information to youth, parents, and the parish at large through a variety of media in a timely fashion, including social media and a youth calendar.

9. Collaborate with the Children’s Education Commission and Youth Commission in their effort to help develop, organize and oversee programs; specific duties to include preparing an annual budget/report and maintaining a multi-year plan.

10. Integrate youth program activities into the broader set of parish outreach activities.

11. Attend various sporting events, concerts and productions at local middle schools and high schools to support members of the youth group in their activities.

12. Build stronger relationships with youth and parents through appropriate texting and social media.

13. Represent St. James in the wider Christian and local community by serving on appropriate denomination committees and community organizations.

14. Assist in administering general parish electronic communication and social media.

15. Assist in sacramental ministry to the parish at large.

16. Preach and provide pastoral care as part of a regular rotation.

17. Perform other duties and tasks as requested by the Rector.

 

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Abilities

1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

2. A candidate for a Masters in Divinity with a strong record of academic performance.

3. A candidate for Holy Orders in the Episcopal Church.

4. A well-grounded and robust Christian faith, with the ability to articulate it to young people.

5. A demonstrated commitment to working with children, young people, and parents.

6. Outstanding leadership and relationship skills for educating, inspiring, and empowering young people, teachers, volunteers, parents, and reaching out to newcomers.

Church of the Holy Communion, an Episcopal Church in the center of Memphis, seeks to be a sacred presence, grounded in the servant ministry of Jesus, offering spiritual growth opportunities for all. This position is imagined as a twist on the traditional curacy model, in that the rector of a neighboring parish will serve as mentor to the priest-in-charge of Trinity, and this position will be offered to a newly ordained transitional deacon or priest who possesses the gifts to lead Trinity in an independent model of general supervision provided by the mentoring priest.

Diocesan leadership believes that the people of Trinity have the gifts needed to explore this model of ministry for a two-year period (with an option to extend to three), and that the identified mentor priest is capable of providing appropriate mentoring and supervision to the priest and parish. Election as rector at the end of the two or three year period would be permitted. The last two rectors of Trinity were newly ordained; Trinity was their first position after seminary, and Trinity has proved to be a wonderful place for the newly ordained to grow into priesthood.

Trinity Church is in a small town setting; Lexington Michigan, is a resort town on the shores of Lake Huron. The parish is a lead in an ecumenical feeding program in the county, and is involved in community events such as art shows and musical gatherings. The parish has also done an excellent job of maintaining the physical plant.

The Cathedral Church of St. Mark in Salt Lake City, Utah, one of America’s most historic Cathedrals, is calling for a full-time youth formation director for teen and college ministry. This person will also assist the dean in developing and implementing cathedral liturgies.

As a cathedral staff member, you will share the normal priestly duties of preaching and celebrating on our weekly rota of eight Eucharists. You will be responsible for the weekly bulletin and special liturgies, including working with the diocese on liturgies that occur at the cathedral.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Oversee our junior high, senior high and college ministry formation and social ministries
• Work in collaboration with Canon Rebecca Ball, our children’s formation director

Committee for Reconciliation and Diversity

The School of Theology educates staff, students, faculty, and volunteers to function in a diverse environment by offering diversity workshops, programs, and conferences supported by the Gamaliel Foundation and the Kaleidoscope Institute with funding from Jesse Ball DuPont, Arthur Vining Davis, and the J. C. Flowers Scholarship Program.

Originally founded by Dean Emeritus William Stafford as the Committee for a New Day, the committee initially focused on historic issues of race and racism. The Committee for Diversity and Reconciliation is now expanding its engagement of faculty and students and broadening its scope of work to include a range of critical social issues, such as discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, class, and disability. Listening sessions this fall will determine the direction of the committee's work in the coming year.

Dr. Paul Holloway is the chair of the committee, which is comprised of students and faculty members. Holloway is the professor of New Testament and not unfamiliar with prejudice through the ages. Two of his books, Coping with Prejudice: 1 Peter in Social Psychological Perspective (Tübingen, 2009), and Women and Gender in Ancient Religions (Tübingen, 2010), deal with issues of prejudice in early Christian context.

The Committee’s Charge

“This is a standing committee of The School of Theology. It is charged to deepen the education of this community concerning the sins of prejudice and discrimination based on such things as age, class, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation. In the context of God’s creation and reconciliation of humankind it seeks to:

  •     develop and implement ways to foster a change of mind and heart in and beyond this community
  •     widen the presence and participation of under-represented groups throughout The School of Theology
  •     promote changes to our structures and culture so that we may be a more adequate sign and instrument of God’s reign.”

Formation

Priestly formation is in itself an exercise in diversity training, one that lies at the heart of the residential theological experience in Sewanee. Living in close community with a varied student population prepares priests for full engagement with the diversity of today’s Church and the modern world.

Field Education

Sewanee provides many opportunities to engage with diverse ministry experiences despite its relatively isolated geographic location. Students can take advantage of the many options in cities across the country or they can choose a small local country parish or travel to nearby Chattanooga or Nashville for a big-city experience.

Mission Committee

This committee plans, coordinates, and carries out service events through which members of the seminary community can witness to and live out their call to proclaim the Good News and to share their resources of time, money, and talent with persons in need.  Projects frequently are responses to requests from Episcopal communities in Africa and Latin America.  The committee also sponsors educational events to inform students about vocational opportunities in foreign missions.

Companions in Ministry is composed of all spouses and partners of seminarians, faculty, and staff from The School of Theology at the University of the South. The CIM meet the third Tuesday of each month during the academic year for programs, fun, and fellowship. The CIM organize several events during the year for the entire seminary community as well as other special events for the CIM community.

Cuba Trip 2014 | The School of Theology | Sewanee: The University of the South

Cuba Trip 2014

John Solomon, visiting instructor in pastoral Spanish, has organized a trip to Cuba for alumni/ae and friends of The School of Theology from Jan. 8 through Jan. 13, 2014. Highlights of the trip include visiting Episcopal parishes in Cardenas, Limonar, and Coliseo; a lunch and afternoon visit at the Seminario Evangélico de Teología; a walking tour of Old Havana; and a Sunday service at the Episcopal Cathedral followed by lunch with the Episcopal Bishop of Cuba, Griselda Delgado. Itinerary

Wednesday, Jan. 8th:  We meet at 5:00AM at Miami International Airport for an 8:00AM flight to Havana where we will be taken by bus to Varadero, about two hours east of Havana.  We will stay at the Hotel Paradisius.

Thursday, Jan. 9th:  After a leisurely breakfast, we will take a day trip to visit Episcopal parishes located in Cardenas, Limonar and Coliseo. 

Friday, Jan. 10th: A mid-morning departure from Hotel Paradisius for Matanzas gets us to a barbeque lunch with seminarians and staff at the Seminario Evangélico de Teología.  Mid-afternoon, we will leave for Havana where we will be staying at the Hotel Parque Central in the heart of downtown Havana.  Friday evening we will dine at a “paladar”, a privately owned restaurant typically located in a private home.

Saturday, Jan. 11th:  In the morning, we will take a walking tour of Old Havana.  In the afternoon, we will tour modern Havana.

Sunday, Jan. 12th:  We will attend the 9:30AM service at the Episcopal Cathedral followed by lunch with the Episcopal Bishop of Cuba, Griselda Delgado.  In the afternoon, we will go to the Mercado de Artesanias, an arts and crafts market by the Havana port.  There will be a surprise engagement after dinner.

Monday, Jan. 13th:   We will make a 6:30AM departure from the hotel for the flight back to Miami.

Costs

The per person costs below, based on a group of 20-25, include:

• Airfare to/from Havana from Miami.
• Medical insurance coverage (up to $25,000).
• Ground transportation in Cuba.
• Full time guide.
• All meals with exception of lunch Friday (estimated cost of $15), dinner Friday evening (estimated cost $25) and lunch on Sunday (estimated cost of $25).

Single occupancy:  $2,639
Double occupancy:  $2,193
Triple occupancy: $2,072

Additional costs:  Cost of a visa to enter Cuba (approximately $120); a departure tax of approximately $30; and, tips for the guide and driver (allow $100). 

The Episcopal Diocese of Cuba will manage the entry visa process to obtain the necessary documents into the country.

The group will travel to Cuba under the Department of Treasury’s General License provision that allows for travel to the country for religious activities under the auspices of a religious organization.

The tour will be managed by Magaly Fernandez, Group Director, Mambi International, Miami, Florida: (Fernandez specializes in arranging church group visits to Cuba, including those for Bishop Leo Frade of the Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida.)
