Under the Lordship of Jesus Christ,

4. We are a learning church. Through Christian education for all ages, we seek to know the mind and will of God.

5. We reach out to our community, both as a parish and as individual Christians, seeking to show the love of Christ to all, and to welcome others into his Kingdom.

Associate Rector, New Bern, N.C. | The School of Theology | Sewanee: The University of the South

Associate Rector, New Bern, N.C.

Associate Rector

Christ Church

Diocese of Eastern Carolina

New Bern, N.C.

As Christ Church, New Bern, celebrates her 300th year, we are seeking an Associate Rector whose primary areas of responsibility will include outreach and pastoral care.

Christ Church has a long history of caring for those in our community and beyond. There are literally hundreds of people who are the hands and feet of Jesus in over a dozen efforts to bring comfort and hope to people in need. During the recent Rector Search, Outreach was identified as one of the top priorities going forward. We are prayerfully searching for someone who will help coordinate all of our outreach efforts as well as identify and develop opportunities for multi-generational engagement in service to others. We think this is an amazing chance to be creative while spreading the Gospel through acts of kindness and mercy.

We have many, many lay people engaged in pastoral care as Stephen Ministers and Eucharistic visitors, as well as our newcomer ministry, prayer shawl ministry, providing meals to those who’ve experienced loss or welcomed a new child, just to name a few. (Visit our website for more details.) There is a 25-year history of pastoral care and fellowship within the neighborhoods of New Bern, and we are in the process of re-imagining what that looks like in 2015. We are seeking someone who will help coordinate communication and conversations between the various ministries under the pastoral care umbrella, including actively connecting newcomers to ministries in which they are interested. The associate rector will lead and coordinate hospital and homebound visitations, working with the Rector and lay pastoral leaders.

Rector

Holy Cross Episcopal Church

Diocese of Wisconsin

Milwaukee, Wis.

Holy Cross is a vibrant Christian community steeped in the Episcopal traditions of the Anglican Communion and a member of the Diocese of Milwaukee. We are looking for a part-time commitment from an ordained Episcopal clergy person willing to walk with us; keep our feet sure on the path; and capture the hearts and minds of both young and old. Our wish list is short: Mass on Sundays and pastoral care.

What does the successful candidate look like? Seasoned. Compassionate and empathetic. Loves and respects the elders and cradles the youth with humor and gentleness. Forward thinking with respect to time-honored Episcopal traditions.

Committee for Reconciliation and Diversity | The School of Theology | Sewanee: The University of the South

Committee for Reconciliation and Diversity

The School of Theology educates staff, students, faculty, and volunteers to function in a diverse environment by offering diversity workshops, programs, and conferences supported by the Gamaliel Foundation and the Kaleidoscope Institute with funding from Jesse Ball DuPont, Arthur Vining Davis, and the J. C. Flowers Scholarship Program.

Originally founded by Dean Emeritus William Stafford as the Committee for a New Day, the committee initially focused on historic issues of race and racism. The Committee for Diversity and Reconciliation is now expanding its engagement of faculty and students and broadening its scope of work to include a range of critical social issues, such as discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, class, and disability. Listening sessions this fall will determine the direction of the committee's work in the coming year.

Dr. Paul Holloway is the chair of the committee, which is comprised of students and faculty members. Holloway is the professor of New Testament and not unfamiliar with prejudice through the ages. Two of his books, Coping with Prejudice: 1 Peter in Social Psychological Perspective (Tübingen, 2009), and Women and Gender in Ancient Religions (Tübingen, 2010), deal with issues of prejudice in early Christian context.

The Committee’s Charge

“This is a standing committee of The School of Theology. It is charged to deepen the education of this community concerning the sins of prejudice and discrimination based on such things as age, class, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, and sexual orientation. In the context of God’s creation and reconciliation of humankind it seeks to:

  •     develop and implement ways to foster a change of mind and heart in and beyond this community
  •     widen the presence and participation of under-represented groups throughout The School of Theology
  •     promote changes to our structures and culture so that we may be a more adequate sign and instrument of God’s reign.”

Formation

Priestly formation is in itself an exercise in diversity training, one that lies at the heart of the residential theological experience in Sewanee. Living in close community with a varied student population prepares priests for full engagement with the diversity of today’s Church and the modern world.

Field Education

Sewanee provides many opportunities to engage with diverse ministry experiences despite its relatively isolated geographic location. Students can take advantage of the many options in cities across the country or they can choose a small local country parish or travel to nearby Chattanooga or Nashville for a big-city experience.

Seminary Committees | The School of Theology | Sewanee: The University of the South

Seminary Committees

Committee for Diversity and Reconciliation

Originally founded by Dean Emeritus William Stafford as the Committee for a New Day, this committee initially focused on historic issues of race and racism. The Committee for Diversity and Reconciliation continues to lead the community in discussions around these issues, but has expanded its engagement of faculty and students in broadening its scope of work to include a range of critical social issues, such as discrimination based on gender, age, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and disability. Listening sessions during the Advent semester will determine the direction of the committee's work in the coming year.

This is a standing committee of the School of Theology and it is charged with deepening the education and conversation of this community concerning the sins of prejudice and discrimination of all kinds. In the context of God’s creation and reconciliation of humankind, it seeks to:

  • develop and implement ways to foster a change of mind and heart in and beyond this community
  • widen the presence and participation of under-represented groups throughout The School of Theology
  • promote changes to our structures and culture so that we may be a more adequate sign and instrument of God’s reign.”

Ministry formation is in itself an exercise in diversity training, one that lies at the heart of the residential theological experience in Sewanee. Living in close community with a varied student population prepares priests and church leaders for full engagement with the diversity of today’s Church and the modern world.

Mission Committee

This committee plans, coordinates, and executes service events through which members of the seminary community can witness to and live out their call to proclaim the Good News and to share their resources of time, money, and talent with persons in need. Projects are in response to local, national, and international communities.

The recently established Community Engagement Fellows program gives students an opportunity to develop a ministry that seeks to more fully integrate community service, social justice, advocacy and faith, in order to deepen the engagement of the School with the broader community. Fellows in this program extend the reach of the School that include working with local agencies to help raise awareness of hunger, collecting food and supplies, training individuals in life skills who are victims of domestic violence, and mentoring prison inmates. The goal of all of the initiatives that are led by the fellows is the establishment of a network of community volunteer opportunities for seminary students, faculty, and staff.

Beginning in 2014, the School of Theology has been named annually as one of the “Seminaries That Change The World,” a consortium of seminaries and divinity schools that work together to transform the culture of theological education through the integration of community service, justice ministry, and advocacy throughout curricular and extracurricular life.

Patoral Care Committee

The Pastoral Care Committee supports the life of the seminary through a multi-leveled approach that is holistic by addressing the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of the community. This committee unites the community through common prayer requests of students, faculty, and staff that brings awareness of the concerns of the community while offering the emotional support. These prayer requests are published weekly and are prayed for personally in homes and corporately in chapel services. This committee recognizes the connection between physical wellbeing and spiritual health and encourages student-lead initiatives that attend to the overall health of the entire seminary community. The Pastoral Care Committee is actively engaged in both traditional and innovative methods for addressing the pastoral needs of the entire seminary community.
