2012 DuBose Lectures
2012 DuBose Lectures and Alumni Gathering

Guest Lecturer
This year's lecturer is the Rev. Dr. Thomas G. Long, Bandy Professor of Preaching and coordinator of the initiative in religious practices and practical theology at Emory University's Candler School of Theology. The title of his lectures is "Preaching in More than One Language: Enchantment, Wisdom, and Embodiment." In 1996, Dr. Long was named one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world. Preaching magazine named his book, Witness of Preaching, one of the 25 most influential books on preaching in the past 25 years.
The commonly assumed picture of preachers preaching sermons to congregations has recently become more complex in the light of the fact that “congregations” are actually composed of many different constituencies. Preachers do not preach to only one kind of parishioner with a shared bandwidth of need and concern. They preach to many different kinds of hearers, with differing relationships to the Christian faith, with differing communicational needs and expectations. Preachers need to preach in more than one “language,” more than one mood, more than one style, more than one voice. The Scripture itself, with its multiple genres and literary patterns, provides a guide for the preacher who wishes to speak a timely and pertinent Word to a restless and fragmented culture. In the lectures, Long will explore several of the different “languages” in which preachers today are summoned to speak.
Lecture # 1 – The Preacher Becomes Multilingual
Lecture # 2 – Preaching in the Language of Wisdom
Lecture # 3 – Preaching in the Languages of Enchantment and Embodiment
