The School of Theology. Sewanee: The University of the South

From the Dean

What does Sewanee offer the many pilgrims who come here?

Thirteen thousand acres belonging to 28 dioceses of the Episcopal Church containing a small town, a fine liberal arts college, a vigorous and ambitious theological seminary, and much land that is lovingly and thoughtfully overseen. Built out of the ruins of the Civil War by impoverished patricians, it is undergoing a deep exploration of its old exclusions.

It is a mountain with many chapels, a place of great literary distinction, new LEED certified science buildings, astonishing biodiversity, and a developing and expanding commitment to sustainability. It is an ecclesiastical peculiar, a place of pilgrimage, a place where angels are widely thought to gather and where audacious herds of deer certainly do.

It is the international headquarters of Education for Ministry, neighbor of an Anglican women's religious order, crossroads for church leadership from all over the world, and home to the Center for Religion and Environment. All that, infused with a gentle spirit of Christian humanism in its Anglican mode, growing into Christ with both intellect and heart, gladly hospitable to other perspectives.
